11:19 pm - Boo.
|
Ugh, I'm so upset at this article I was just linked to: Harry Potter fails to cast spell over Professor Richard Dawkins .
What do you do when two things that you love are at odds? Richard Dawkins has apparently resigned his post at Oxford, and is now devoting himself to researching the effect of fairy tales, Harry Potter in particular, on childrens' minds.
Richard Dawkins is...I guess I'd call him a personal hero. I often use his arguments when I'm talking religion or atheism with someone. I watch his youtube videos when I'm feeling down in order to cheer myself up. He's such a well-spoken and articulate man; I've always been proud to see him representing atheism. Honestly, judging by what I know of him, I wouldn't be surprised if this article was somewhat out of context, because he sounds just as bad as the religious nuts who think that Harry Potter is evil for the opposite reason. Still, it is rather upsetting to see two things that I love so much go head to head. I hope he at least reads the books during his scientific inquiry. He's gonna have a lot of time on his hands, after all.

I'm totally giving away my political affiliations here (which, of course, have never really been much of a secret ^_^), but I can't help but share how happy this makes me.
I found a copy of the Philadelphia Metro on the subway today. Maybe not the most reputable news source, but I wouldn't say that it's complete garbage. Anyway, I teared up a little bit from excitement when I saw the front page:

Barack Obama may not be a perfect solution to all of the problems in the USA, but he is certainly a step in the forward direction. I think most of the world agrees with that. Let's just keep hoping that America does too.

1:10 pm - Why I Love Academia...

Best thing ever:
During a discussion of the Trojan War in my mythology class the professor mentions the hero and sidekick convention exemplifed by Achilles and Patroclus, dubbing the former as Achilles "special friend."
If that weren't coy enough, he goes on:
"That's why, in the Harry Potter books, I was sure Ron Weasley was going to die. He [Harry] was so clearly a Greek Hero and Ron was his special friend...*pause* Turns out Snape was his special friend."
FTW.

11:49 pm - Sitting cross-legged on my ass on the road of life...
|
I need something in my life. I'm not sure what it is, but the need is getting very urgent. Sometimes I just get this really desperate desire for somthing new. I feel like I've been stagnant for too long, with no new experiences and nothing that I've really learned. Does this make sense? I need a hobby, or a philosophy, or a community. Let me see...times before, when I've needed something, I started fencing, or I got a job, or I worked on developing a new interest like writing or quilting. I need to find something like that now, only I can't think of what it should be.
So...any tips? Suggest to me something that I can do to spice up my life. :)

2:53 pm - Operating Systems: Windows vs. Linux
|
Computer people:
I'm thinking about switching my OS from Windows XP to Linux. I'm not a computer person myself, but my Dad is so I've had at least a (very) little bit of experience with it. How difficult do you think it would be for a non-computer person like myself to do this switch on my own, and then to figure out how to use Linux? Also, is it worth switching? I mean, Linux seems like a beautiful, stable, non-virus catching dream, but are there a lot of cons to go with the pros?
Help is so very appreciated! *hugs to all helpers* (more intimate thank yous can be arranged). :D

As a lover of all things crafty, I found this meme irresistible. :)
Pay It Forward: I will send a handmade gift to the first 3 people who leave a comment here on my blog. I don’t yet know what that gift will be, but you will receive it within 365 days. The only thing you have to do in return is "pay it forward" by making a similar agreement on your blog.
Stolen from katilara on lj.
BTW, this is my first post on InsaneJournal, so hello to all of you! And also, this should be posting to IJ, LJ, and SI, so let's hope that works.
